Hattie A. Sherman was a native of Ashtabula’s Bunker Hill neighborhood. She was an active leader in city charitable work establishing a Seamen’s Bethel at Ashtabula Harbor and serving as an “indefatigable worker for the temperance cause.” Sherman, through her “insistent demands and personal labor,” was feted as a leading force behind the 1904 founding and construction of Ashtabula General Hospital, today’s Ashtabula County Medical Center.
